BOUNDARIES

Testing the limits of 3DPG with unique installations.

Round It Out

Oh, the beautiful lake There is nothing quite like walking around the park on a Sunday afternoon. The farmers market rumbling in the background, groups of friends milling about, and the crowds of people… sitting in the middle of the walkway?

One Floridian city knew just how beneficial proper seating areas could be but amongst the swan boats and the colorful amphitheater, traditional benches didn’t quite fit. The lake needed something more to round out the beautiful scenery. Something that could blend into the environment so that children, adults, and pets alike could enjoy the views. After doing some research the city found the perfect solution!

The city found the perfect provider for a rounded-out pebble-like seating design with a well-known company. There were several sizes and the design would blend in well with the surrounding lake. As the city continued to research the seating costs, lead times, and customization options, however, the pebble seats were found to not be so great of a fit. The shape of the seats was absolutely perfect but it was definitely missing something…

PRINTING FOR YOUR BUDGET

Fast forward a few weeks. The city was a bit stumped as to how to proceed, but they saw a new route. A 3D polygrout company was doing some work with a few of the largest companies in the area. Some great work was coming out of 3DPG and the city got an idea. What if we 3D print the seats? So they reached out to the company - Pikus 3D - to see if Pikus would be willing to take on this task.

Pushing Printing Limits

Pikus was excited to take on the challenge. Proving a fully encapsulated design would mean that Pikus could fabricate even crazier creations. After studying ways to achieve a rounded, pebble-like seating area Pikus settled on a two-part system that printed the design in halves before sealing them together. This project would be shipped within 7 weeks and could be coated to match the surrounding area. The solution was so much better than a traditional cast-in-place or precast seating! The city jumped on the opportunity to have 3D-printed custom seating arrangements in its largest and busiest park.

Because of this project, Pikus was able to take the 3D poly-grout printer to its limits. It is not until we push the boundaries that we can actually discover what our limits are. To bring this project from concept to installation in 3 months with a fully encapsulated and coated product is insane. Working with the city to bring this unique seating arrangement into reality was such an amazing journey. As a result of this adventure, Pikus proudly offers the same seating arrangement to all who want to utilize the beautiful shape and variation of the Pikus Bolides.
